Basil, African Blue USDA Certified Organic 2 ½ in. Pots
Beautiful addition to the herb or flower garden and does well potted. African Blue has purplish-green leaves that retain a purple vein as they get bigger. The purple to hot pink flower spikes do not produce seed so this basil is one of the few to be considered perennial. Cut stems add beauty to cut flower arrangements, make interesting garnishes, and are great to flavor vinegar. Because of its perennial nature, it does well to be over wintered indoors in pots. Propagation is from cuttings only.
Needs full sun to part shade. Shade will cause lower yield
Basil does not like to be wet and roots will rot if exposed to constant water. When you receive you basil plants, pot them in a small pot. As they grow re-pot them to a larger pot. Planting them in a large pot to begin with may cause root rot or other disease if the soil does not dry out. Use a Terra cotta pot to avoid this problem. Use a good potting soil not black dirt or top soil for your pots. We prefer Organic Pro Mix. It contains an organic starter fertilizer. Prune your basil plant when it reaches 8 inches to increase branching. After each pruning, side dress with an organic fertilizer or compost. Cuttings can be used for culinary purposes. When the summer nights stay above 60° F and days are above 80° Basil will undergo explosive growth. To take advantage of this, make sure you have paid attention to pruning.
Grows to 36”-48”
Space Plants 12” to 18” apart. Basil needs good circulation around the plants to help minimize fungus
